It's my last trip down the Island. It's always sad when you know it is your last trip away. For this trip I made sure I covered all the huts and that I didn't travel alone. My great friends of summer joined me in the huts down Island for the farewell tour....I also said goodbye to the true residents of this place. I wonder if they know we are all about to leave.... I make an attempt to climb the highest peak on Macca, Mt Hamilton, and succeed. This is the first day I have seen the Island so clear. But with the good comes the bad...the weather is again trying to remind me that it rules this place and not to be dealt with lightly. All and all an incredible last journey, summing up my time away from station into the wet, mountainous green realm that is Macquarie Island.

This is Misty. She is an AKC registered Beagle puppy of 4 months. Her owner and my best friend is Andy Pauls of Long Lake, NY. She is the newest addition to a family of 4 beagles total. As you "can" see, Misty likes her Old Milwaukee. She just can't quite sink her teeth into it though. Andy's 3 older beagles have all competed in several Field Trials over the Northeast and he has done very well over the years.

Summer has well and truly kicked in here at Macca with the weather improving greatly and temperatures rising to 10+ degrees. It may not sound hot but it feels it. The wildlife try their best to cope with the increasing degrees by throwing sand on themselves and heading into the cool water. The young wildlife around station are become more active. The juvenile king penguins are scouting the isthmus looking for trouble and are in the deep water feeding their curiosity. Meanwhile, the second cycle of King penguin eggs are underway as parents incubate and await the hatch. The young Gentoo chicks are being shown how to swim, but getting them in the water has proven more difficult then imaged. In between swimming lessons, they start to moult and turn into young adults. The Macquarie Island Blue Eyed Shag have also hatched their young over within the shelter of the rocky Handspike Point. Most chicks have been hatched, but some adults are still maintaining nests. Summer has also brought new wildlife. The Light Mantled Sooty Albatrosses have returned to start their mating and nesting...fur seals have started to settle into their harems and have bore pups....Royal and Rockhopper penguins have turned up in massive numbers...and the Skua's have had chicks and are teaching them how to survive for themselves.
