NEW ZEALAND — More than 20 seals have been clubbed to death on the Kaikoura coast. Some of the eight newborn pups killed in the attack were just a few days old. The dead seals also included 13 females and two bulls, according to media reports. Department of Conservation South Marlborough area manager Dave Hayes told media it was a "callous and cowardly attack". "Some of the dead seals appear to have been killed a week ago; others look to have been killed around a week or so beforehand," he said. "This is a callous and cowardly attack on seals, especially newborn pups, unable to defend themselves against someone striking them with a bat or similar club-like object." He said after examining their smashed skulls it appeared it "was a person or persons of some strength who carried out the attacks". The seals were found at the Ohau Point seal colony, about 22 km north of Kaikoura township. Anyone with information about the seal attack and the person or persons responsible should contact DOC's South Marlborough Area Office in Renwick, phone (03) 572 9100 or police.

A fine Comanche County Texas buck is taken with a surprise second buck with one shot. Very early morning deer hunting results from November 2009. No night vision equipment used. (SHOT DURING LEGAL HOURS / The camera did not have enough light for best illumination) The actual shot can be seen in the footage, but it was too dark to show much more than the flash of the hot bullet streaking to its target. "Deshaker" software is used to stabilize some footage.

This is "Blaze" (Blazing Saddles) and "Dakota" (aka hellboy) running in the backyard while I have them out of my dog run to clean it. They are running lose with my dogs - a Carolina Dog and a Pug Dog. The squeaking noise in the background is my dog playing with a stuffed toy. The cheering is out on the street because tonight is Naaman Forest prom night. It was difficult to get a pick of these pups because they want to stay right by my side. They will make great trail dogs.

The founder of outdoor clothing and equipment chain Kathmandu has given $2 million to help fight factory farming with some of the money being offered to workers to rat on their bosses. The Animal Justice Fund (AJF) was launched by the animal rights group Save Animals From Exploitation (Safe) today after Kathmandu founder and philanthropist Jan Cameron gave $2 million to the fund. Australian-born Ms Cameron, who founded Kathmandu in 1987, is a prominent supporter of animal welfare having previously given A$5m ($6.4m) to set up a similar fund in Australia. Safe director Hans Kriek said the fund meant the organisation could prosecute farmers who committed offences against animals. The fund would act as a national watchdog for factory pig, chicken and battery hen farms and would also help fund promotional campaigns, he said. "Safe may even challenge, in the High Court, welfare codes that allow ongoing abuse of animals," he said. Safe has been a strong critic of factory farming in New Zealand and made the headlines last year when Mike King, a former spokesman for the pork industry, spoke out against the factory farming of pigs. Farm animals are specifically excluded from animal welfare legislation, so farmers could be engaged in cruel practices that are not necessarily against the law.
